Early on, William Heikkinen understood the value of giving to the community. He worked hard, received opportunities and he knew he could do the same for other students.
With a group of peer students from Andover High School, William got involved in tutoring and mentoring children at the Robert L. Frost Elementary School in Lawrence, Massachusetts in his senior year.
At this elementary school, William Heikkinen and his classmates had a great impact on the students with whom they worked. These high school seniors were ready to take on the challenge of helping young students achieve their academic potential. Not only did the elementary teachers see a positive impact on the children’s academic achievements, but also, as a bonus, they saw an increase in the students’ self-esteem and confidence.
William and his classmates’ commitment to this volunteer venture was a positive one for all involved. Each high school senior received a letter of commendation from the principal of the school thanking them for their contributions to the students, the teachers, and the school as a whole.
This experience impressed upon William Heikkinen his need to give back to the community and to help others succeed. Giving money is one thing, but giving of your time and influence on those around you when they are struggling, is even more important. The elementary students learned lessons from the high school students that will last for a lifetime.
